Can Guinea Pigs Eat Pizza? (Guide For Owners)

Most people enjoy pizza. Adults and children especially love it. It originated in Italy and is made from bread dough. It is flattened on a tray and topped with the following ingredients: cheese, pepperoni, onions, chicken, and other toppings of your choice.

This is then baked in an oven at a high temperature and served hot. So if humans enjoy pizza, can guinea pigs eat pizza?

Guinea pigs should not be fed pizza. Guinea pigs are lactose intolerant. This means their digestive systems can’t handle dairy products. Cheese is one of the toppings on a pizza. As a byproduct of milk, cheese would upset their digestive systems. Pizza is high in fat and is unhealthy for a guinea pig.

Can Guinea Pigs Eat Pizza?

Why Can’t Guinea Pigs Eat Pizza?

Pizza has cheese on it which guinea pigs cannot digest. Their gastrointestinal system lacks the enzyme lactase which breaks down dairy products like cheese. Likewise, a guinea pig’s digestive system is not equipped to process cooked food. A guinea pig should only ever be given raw food to eat.

Pizza is also high in fat. A guinea pig’s diet should consist of lean foods rich in fiber such as hay and raw vegetables. Feeding your guinea pig fatty foods like pizza can lead to obesity and other health issues.

Is Pizza Toxic to Guinea Pigs?

Pizza can prove fatal to guinea pigs depending upon the toppings which are on it. While dairy products can provide distress and discomfort, other commonly used pizza ingredients such as pepperoni and onions can kill your guinea pig.

Guinea pigs are herbivorous animals, meaning they only eat plant material. Their digestive systems are not equipped to break down meat like a carnivore’s stomach does. If consumed, meat products can cause severe intestinal distress and may even lead to death.

Onions are also poisonous to guinea pigs. A chemical in onions known as disulfide can cause severe damage to a guinea pig’s red blood cells resulting in oxygen loss and anemia. Your guinea pig may become extremely weak and stop breathing. Onions in any form can be fatal to your guinea pig.

What Should You Feed Your Guinea Pigs?

Guinea pigs’ diet should comprise an unlimited supply of Timothy hay. They need hay to help them maintain a healthy digestive system. It also helps with their teeth as well.

Guinea pigs should also be provided with small amounts of timothy-based pellets. In addition to hay and pellets, guinea pigs should also be given small portions of vegetables and fruits.

You must ensure that vegetables and fruits have a high vitamin C content. Vitamin C is an essential vitamin guinea pigs need daily in their diet. Lack of this vitamin leads to a condition in guinea pigs called scurvy.

Final Thoughts

Pizza should never be fed to guinea pigs for multiple reasons. Guinea pigs do not have digestive systems with the ability to process dairy products such as cheese or meat such as pepperoni. Some toppings, like onions, may even prove fatal to guinea pigs.

To keep your guinea pig healthy and happy, stick to a diet of hay and raw vegetables and keep the pizza for yourself.
